Investigation of emotional intelligence and parental attitudes in secondary school students

In this research, relationships between secondary school students parentalattitudens and emotional intelligence levelshave been examined. The subject were 289 girls and 314 boys of secondary school students, in all 603 adolescents. Bar-On Emotinal Quatient İnventory Youth Version EQ-İ (YV) adapted by the Köksal is used to determine the emotional intelligence level of the students. In the study, a Parental Attitudes Instrument was used. It was developed by Lamborn, Mounts, Steinberg and Dornbush (1991) in order to measure the students perceived parental attitudes and Yılmaz (2000) carried out its validity and reliability studies in our culture. Statistical analyses were conducted via SPSS 11.5. In order to achieve the related aims first frequency and percentage analysis related to the students? schools, gender, grade level, and parental attitudes. In order to see the differences between the variables factorial ANOVA employed. The test of Tukey LSD was used to find out between which groups are the differences.It was found that Interpersonel, Stres Management and Adaptability emotional intelligence levels are higher in democratic than neglectful, protective and authoritarian parents attitude. It was found that Intrapersonel, Interpersonel and Adaptability emotional intelligence levels are lowest in neglectful than, democratic protective and authoritarian parents attitude. It was found that the Intrapersonel emotional intelligence levels are higher in 8. grade than 6. and 7. grade and was found that the Adaptability and General Mood emotional intelligence levels are higher in 6. grade than 7. and 8.grade. It was found that the Intrapersonel and Interpersonel emotional intelligence levels are higher in girls than the boys and was found that the Stres Management emotional intelligence levels are higher in boys than the girls. There is no significant relationship between emotional intelligence interactions of grade level with attitude of parents. There is no significant relationship between emotional intelligence interactions of gender with the attitude of parents.Keywords: Parental Attitudes , Emotional Intelligence
