The effects of the academic self-concept on the school achievement of secondary school students

ABSTRACT THE EFFECTS OF THE ACADEMIC SELF-CONCEPT ON SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS İÇBAY Oya Master Thesis Educational Sciences Advisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Necmiye KARATAŞ In this study, it was aimed to find out the relationship between the academic self-concept and the achievement in Turkish, Science, Social, English courses. The questionnaire was administered to 420 students attending 6th, 7th and 8th classes in randomly selected state schools in Gaziantep. In order to obtain data, the scale of Academic Self - Concept was used. The study was limited to courses of Mathematics, Science, Social and English and the grades were assumed to indicate achievement in these courses. Chi-sguare was used in order to see the relationship. Statistically significant relationship was founel between academic self concept and achievement of Mathematics, English, Science and Social courses.
