Teacher opinions for the evaluation of reading hours in the elementary schools

The aim of this study, in addition to evaluate the effectiveness reading hours in the elementary schools taking the teachers opinions, is to increase the effectiveness of the reading hours with the findings obtained from the opinions of the teachers towards the class library which they used during the practice, the pre-reading, during reading and post-reading activities made for the practice and the effects of the practice on getting the students adopt the habit of reading.Public schools connected to The Ministry of National Education in Karabük/Central compose the population of the study. 216 teachers working in 16 elementary schools in Karabük/Central and 10 elementary schools in Safranbolu compose the sample of this study. A questionnaire developed by the researcher was used as the data collection tool in order to take the opinions of the teachers. The data collection tool is basically made up of two parts. In the first part, personal information appeared in. As for the second part, The Reading Hours Evaluation Scale was used to assess the reading hours in elementary schools. The scale is made up of items prepared on a 5-point Lichert Scale.In data analyzing, SPSS 15.0 program was used. In an attempt to analyze the subproblems, statistical analyses suitable for every subproblem were preferred. These are t-test, Kruskal-Wallis H Test, One-Tailed Variance Analysis (ANOVA), Tukey-HSD Multiple Comparison Test for the independent groups. In the process of the analysis interpretation, arithmetic average ( ), Standard deviation (S), average rank and significance values (p) were examined.The findings demonstrate that the teachers implement reading hour activities successfully; however, they carry into effect fewer pre-reading and post-reading activities. Consequently, it was determined that the teachers participating in the study give importance to reading habits and agree about the opinion that there are a number of variables influencing the reading habits and the reading hours must be arranged effectively in order to have the students to acquire reading habits. In the light of these findings, some suggestions were made for the effective reading hours practice and probable scientific studies in the future.
