An action research on improving the creative writing skills of primary school 3rd grade students with creative drama method

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to identify the problems encountered in the field of writing and to reveal the effect of creative drama method on the development of creative writing skills. The research was planned according to the action research method which is one of the qualitative research designs. The research was carried out with 12 students in the 3rd grade of an elementary school located in Egirdir District of Isparta Province in the Spring Semester of 2018-2019 academic year. Action plan; five workshops consisted of preparation for creative writing and fifteen workshops consisted of creative writing. These workshops consist of creative writing lesson plans prepared according to the gains of the 3rd grade Turkish course writing, where creative drama is used as the course method. The research was conducted on 18.03.2019-21.05.2019 for 10 weeks and 20 workshops in two workshops each week. The research data were obtained from student, teacher, parent interviews, self-assessment forms, student, parent and teacher diaries, pre-measurement, final measurement and products written by the student. Student diaries were evaluated and scored with the Daily Assessment Rubric developed by the researcher and the pre-measurement and final measurement, and the products were evaluated and scored with the Creative Writing Rubric developed by the researcher. The qualitative data obtained from interview and self-evaluation were analyzed by content analysis and the findings were interpreted in the direction of the research questions. In the process of determining the problem of the research, it was determined that the students did not like to write, had difficulty in finding content to write, and did not want to write the chapters of the textbook. As a result of the creative writing activities using the creative drama method applied in the research process, it was found that the students expressed positive feelings as they liked to write and they wanted to write. On the other hand, it was determined that creative drama method had a positive effect on the development of creative writing skill in the pre-measurement, final measurement and texts they wrote.
