Determination of active vocabulary in the written expressions of 4th grade students

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the active vocabulary, which the fourth grade students studying in primary schools of Kurtalan, Siirt used in their written expressions, in terms of various variables. In line with this objective, it is researched whether the vocabulary generates statistically significant difference according to the variables such as gender, preschool education status, socio-economic income level and educational structure of the family, number of siblings, reading habit, the number of book pages read in a month, spending time on the Internet and correspondence status, voluntary writing frequency of the students. Two schools with high student achievement were selected among the Kurtalan district central schools of Siirt Province. The papers on theme types like autobiography, memory, freestyle of 133 students (73 females and 60 males) were examined. Three different types of expression were performed in six sessions as first and second semester, and 798 written data were evaluated. The collected data were scanned according to gender, word and writing types and transferred to the digital environment by using "Microsoft Excel" program. The personal information form was used to identify the students who formed the study group and to associate them with the vocabulary. Statistical analysis techniques which are appropriate to the characteristics of the variables were applied by using SPSS Computer Package Program. The following conclusions were found: In the study that a total of 22316 words were used in a total of 798 written documents written by 133 students, 12850 words were realized in the first application and 9466 words in the second application. The types with high and low word averages are memories and autobiographies, respectively. Compared to female students and male students in terms of average word wealth, it is seen that female students are more successful than male students. The vocabulary difference according to the level of education of the mother and the father is determined for the type of memory. Differentiation of vocabulary according to the number of siblings has been determined in the type of autobiography. The significant difference between the number of book pages read in a month and the frequency of using the internet of the students in the study group was found only in the free writing type. There was no significant difference between the 4th grade students' vocabulary according to the variables like having pre-school education or not, monthly income, mother and father occupation group, book reading frequency and internet writing frequency.
