Investigation of the relationship between primary school students' temperament types and digital game addictions

Abstract (EN)

Addiction refers to an excessive desire for a substance, behavior or activity and the inability to control this desire. Addiction can be on a physical, mental or emotional level and can negatively affect an individual's daily life. Temperament expresses the characteristics that give an idea about a person's personality and emotional structure. In addition, temperament is used to describe the internal characteristics of people and the behaviors they express. It is seen that the person's temperament is related to various social, emotional and cognitive features. In this respect, it is aimed to reveal the relationship between the game addiction of students and the temperament characteristics of individuals. In this context, scanning model, one of the descriptive research methods, was used in the research. The universe of the research consists of primary school students studying in a private school operating in Antalya in the 2022-2023 academic year. Within the scope of the research, it is aimed to collect data by reaching all primary school students studying at the school. In this respect, no sample limitation was made in the study. As of the 2022-2023 academic year, it has been determined that there are 250 ‎Primary School students in the school. Within the scope of the research, it was tried to reach the whole universe, but due to situations such as dropping out of school, absenteeism and reluctance, data were obtained and evaluated by reaching 236 students. Computer Game Playing Level Scale and Children's Temperament Scale were used as data collection tools in the research.‎ Quantitative data analysis methods will be used in the analysis of research data. In this context, the data were analyzed with the SPSS24 data analysis program. Due to the normal distribution of the data, the data were analyzed with independent sample t test and ANOVA test analyzes from parametric statistical methods. As a result of the research, it has been determined that the temperament type that the students have the most is helpful, supportive, compassionate and cheerful, innovative and curious adventurer. It was concluded that the game addiction levels of the students were low. ‎It was determined that male students' game addiction levels were higher than female students. Although there is no difference in the total scores of game addiction according to the grade level of the students ‎‎4. It was concluded that the level of being addicted to the game and not being able to distract oneself from the game in the 1st grade students, while the 1st grade students were more likely to disrupt their tasks while playing computer games. It was observed that there was no significant difference in the game addiction scores of the students in terms of their parents' relationship status. There was no significant difference between students' temperament types in terms of total scores and sub-dimensions of the students' game addiction scale. ‎
