An analysis of the attitudes of students towards English due to various variables in primary and secondary schools

This study has been conducted to indicate the insufficiency of English lessons which are taught in public schools, both in primary and secondary, in Turkey. The study was also aimed to prove the effect of this insufficiency on motivation of students to learn English. The main goal of this study is to reveal the variables by which the attitude of students towards English changes. Study consists of five parts including Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Findings and interpretation, Conclusion and Recommendations.As a consequence of this study, it is expected that the basic reasons of major failures of reforms and re-arrangements which has been done to improve the system of teaching English in public schools will be clarified and determined, and also correct solutions will be provided.Study was conducted as a qualitative model by the participation of 300 students studying in a primary school and four secondary schools in Şişli, İstanbul. % 40 of the participiants are boys, % 59 of the participiants are girls. The study has been designed as a descriptive research. The data has been obtained by an Attitude Scale for English constituted by Kara (2003) which consists of two parts. Besides, a Personal Information Table has been made up by the researcher to analyse demographic variables. The data obtained has been analysed by using SPSS for Windows 21.0. When comparing quantitative data, T-test was used to determine the difference between two groups. When there were more than two groups, Oneway Anowa test was used to detect the parameters by comparing the groups. To reveal the group causing the difference, Scheffe test was used. Pearson Correlation was used to indicate the relation between dependent variables and independent variables. The effect was also tested by Regression analyse.Results indicate that student can not get sufficient knowledge, skills and satisfaction from English classes. The suggestions about the solutions for the main problems which lies beyond the failure of English education has been handled and roles for teachers and education system has been pointed out as culprits for a successful language teaching.
