Research on correlation between transactional, translational leadership skills and empathy trends of primary and secondary schools' administrators (İstanbul city Sancaktepe district sample)

In this research correlation between transactional and translational leadership skills and empathy trends of primary and secondary schools' administrators is analysed. Also it is examined if there is statistically significant difference in school administrators' transactional and translatoinal leadership skills and empathy trends due to school type, managers' gender, management period, educational level and field. Descriptive scan model is used in the research. Total field under survey consist of 149 administrators who works in primary and secondary schools in Sancaktepe district of Istanbul. Questionnaires are distributed to all administrators and only 137 questionnaires were evaluated due to wrong and lack information. To evaluate administrators' leadership skills Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire evolved by Bass and Avolio (1995) is used. It is composed of 32 clauses; 20 clauses to determine transformational leadership, 12 clauses to determine interactionist leadership. Emphatic Trend Scale evolved by Dokmen (1988) is used to evaluate administrators' empathy trends. Scale is unidimensional. To analysis the input data, frequency and percent values of demographic features are examined, the arithmetic average and standard deviation of points taken from scales are calculated by using SPSS 15.0 Package Programme; Independent Groups T Test and Kruskal Wallis-H Test are used to define difference between groups; to specify which groups differ from each other Mann Whitney U Test is used; Pearson Correlation Analysis is applied to determine the correlation between Leadership Skills Assesment Scale Subdimension total points and Empathy Trend Level Spesification Scale total points. In research result it is determined that; gender, educational level and school type are not effective factors on administrators' leadership skills; the field is effective factor that concieves significant difference on interactionist and transformational leadership skills and total points of leadership ability; also administration seniority factor creates significant difference on total points about transformational leadership skills and leadership ability; gender, school type, field, management period and educational level are not effective factors on administrators' empathy trends; strong positive correlation is determined between empathy trends and leadership ability and between interactionist leadership skills and transformational leadership skills.
