Evaluation of the opinions of class teachers on the factors that are effective in values education primary schools

Abstract The aim of this research is to assess the opinions of class teachers on the factors that are effective in teaching values in primary schools. The research was carried out in the descriptive scanning model, using a mixed method of quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative sample of the study consists of 606 classroom teachers working in primary schools in Batman province during the 2015-2016 academic year. The qualitative study group is composed of 25 teachers interviewed within the scope of the research. In order to obtain quantitative data, "the scale related to the factors influencing the education of values in primary schools" which is developed by the researcher was used and to collect qualitative data a semi-structured interview form was used. Considering mean, frequency, percentage and standard deviation values, the used tests for the analysis of quantitative data are as follows: Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for the homogeneity, Mann-Whitney U test for the two groups and Kruskall Wallis- H test for more than two groups. Descriptive analysis technique was used in analyzing qualitative data. Also, SPSS 22.0 (Statistical Package for the SocialScience) program was used in the analysis of the data. The results obtained in the quantitative dimension of the study are as follows: Teachers expressed their views at the level of Agree in general; There was no significant difference between teacher opinions on gender, classroom level for the conducted courses, in-service training related to values education, the condition whether they had taken seminars or courses, and whether there were educational value corners or boards in class. However, there was a significant difference in favour of the teachers who worked for 1-5 years in terms of their professional experience variables, and in favour of the education faculty graduates in terms of graduation area variables. In the qualitative dimension of the study, the following result was obtained: In values education, the teachers consider family, teacher, implicit program, social environment and mass media as important factors.
