Religious concessions in purification matters according to İmam Shawkānī

The aim of this study is to examine religious concessions in purification matters according to Imam Shawkānī's perspective. This study consists of an introduction and three chapters. The introduction includes the significance of the research, the methodology, the issue being addressed and the literature review. The first chapter gives the biography and scientific achievements of Imam Shawkānī. In the second chapter, the thesis highlights the description of the religious concessions, its types and brings to fore, proofs for religious concessions as well as reasons that make them available. The third chapter cross-examines religious concessions according to Imam Shawkānī and the other school of Islamic jurisprudence (madhhab). In addition, the effects of travel, illness, incapability, forgetfulness, menstruation and postnatal blood on purification are examined. This study shows that Imam Shawkāni's views on religious purification are in line with the views of four schools of Islamic jurisprudence; his deductions are not far from the views of the four schools of jurisprudence. In addition, this study has shown with the example of purification, at least to some extent, how regilious concessions facilitates religious obligations.
