The relationship between the depression levels and the marital adjustment of the women on infertility treatment

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between depression, marital adjustment of the women receiving infertility treatment and the differentiation between depression, marital adjustment according to the sociodemographic variables. The research was run on women (n=228) receiving infertility treatment in a private hospital in Anatolian regian and a private IVF Center in European regian by using sociodemographic survey form, Beck Depression Scale and Marital Adjustment Scale. The data was collected between April 2015-July 2015. SPSS 21.0 software was used for data analysis. There was a significant and inverse relationship (r = - 0,656; p < 0,000) between depression marital Adjustment of the women whereas the point average of Beck's Depression Scale of the women was found to be 10,38 + 9,66, while the point average of Marital Adjustment Scale was found to be 46,17 + 10,74. In conclusion, it is seen that the infertility negatively effects the women psychologically and such case effects the marital adjustment of women. In this context, the studies determining the depression levels of the women during the infertility treatment process must be carried out at the institutions and organizations providing the infertile patients with treatment opportunities and, depending on the outcome, professional psychological support may be suggested for the patients considered to be in need of such support. At this point, the role of the midwives and the nurses is crucial. Taking the steps intended for supporting the marital adjustment and psychological states of the women may be suggested.
