Abstract (EN)
This research investigates the relationship between internet addiction, self-esteem, and social need for approval. 460 people between the ages of 18-65 participated in the study. In the study, internet addiction, self-esteem, and social need for approval were measured by applying the short form of the Young Internet Addiction Scale, The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory, and Social Need For Approval Scale, respectively. In addition, demographic questions were also applied to participants. Data obtained in the study were analyzed using the SPSS program and it was found that there are positive relationships between self-esteem and the need for social approval with internet addiction. It has also emerged that there are positive relationships between internet addiction and the need for social approval. According to the correlational analyses results, the assumption that self-esteem and the need for social approval affected internet addiction. Moreover, as self-esteem increased, the need to ask approval from other individuals decreased. In addition to this, due to regression analysis, internet addiction also increased as the need for social approval boosts. Furthermore, according to the results of the research, it has been revealed that there is a significant relation between low self-esteem and internet addiction. As self-esteem increases, internet addiction decreases. Considering the studies in the literature and in the light of the findings from the research, it has been discussed the possible relationship between internet addiction, self-esteem, and the need for social approval.This research also assesses the limitations, theoretical and practical contributions. Additionally to this, this study contains suggestions for future studies.
