Coffi̇n covers of dynastic tombs in İstanbul

Within the scope of the thesis titled "The Coffin Covers in Dynasty Tombs in Istanbul", the textiles used on the sarcophagi in the Ottoman period dynasty tombs were examined and the covers that are preserved and still used on the sarcophagi in the Istanbul dynasty tombs, which are under the Istanbul Tombs Museum Directorate of the Provincial Directorate of Culture in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and whose research was approved by the Ministry, were introduced in a catalogue. Since the sarcophagi covers are within the scope of Turkish burial tradition, the pre-Islamic and post-Islamic burial tradition has been examined and the development and diversity of this tradition starting from Central Asia and in the Ottoman Empire has been researched. While the density of earth-filled stone and marble sarcophagi in Bursa tombs, which includes the founding period of the Ottoman Empire, is quite high; it is seen that wooden sarcophagi and various textiles were used on the tombs of Istanbul. In the inventory of Topkapı Palace Museum, there are caftans known to come from dynasty tombs, palace fabrics, embroidered covers, and various examples of covers that were brought to the palace after being used in holy places in Mecca and Medina and used on sarcophagi for the second time. One of the biggest factors that increased the power of the Ottoman Empire was the Caliphate. In addition to the duties of the caliphate, this office required the protection and maintenance of the holy places, and in this context, the old coverings in the holy places were replaced with new ones by the Surre Regiment from Istanbul every year and maintenance and repair of these places were carried out. Some of the old coverings brought to Istanbul from the holy places were functionalised for the second time on the sarcophagi of the Ottoman sultans and members of the dynasty. With these coverings, the tombs were considered to be symbolically consecrated. The palace fabrics on the coffins in the dynasty tombs in Istanbul and except for the caftan on his own coffin in the Tomb of Yavuz Sultan Selim, all examples of clothing belonging to the tombs are preserved in the collections of Topkapi Palace Museum and museums abroad. Today, in Istanbul dynasty tombs, there are still a few historical religious covers and covers made with the baroque and rococo patterned "dival" work technique, which became widespread in the 18th century. In the evaluation section, the ornamentation and processing features of the dival embroidered covers in the tombs where research permission was obtained were introduced, and the ornamentation composition features were introduced by separately addressing the head, roof, skirt and foot sections of the coffin cover. Seven designs and applications made in today's artistic understanding, using the decorations seen on the coffin covers, are shown in the Appendix section.
