Alternative living system design and interior design model proposal in İstanbul metropol

The process of globalization has brought about changes in our living spaces, such as the differentiation of spatial organizations, transformation of functions, and the diminishing significance of the concept of "place," fundamentally addressing our housing needs. Rapidly changing demographic structures and urbanization trends worldwide have led to the emergence of new lifestyles and an increasing demand for alternative living systems that cater to individuals' diverse needs. In this context, alternative living systems that go beyond traditional living models for non-traditional households, particularly in major metropolises like Istanbul, have gained significance by combining elements such as sustainability, social interaction, flexibility, and comfort. The aim of this study is to analyze the changes occurring in our living spaces due to evolving living conditions, a globalized and changing world (pandemics, climate crisis, natural disasters, economic crises, housing crises), and the dissolution of the traditional family structure, and to propose new models. In line with this objective, the study seeks to explore the potential of new living systems for alternative households in Istanbul and examine how these systems can be designed to meet user expectations through a model. The primary goal of this research is to understand the expectations of young individuals, belonging to the Y generation and constituting the future population, who form alternative households, within the context of the thesis structure, and to provide new living systems for alternative households and develop appropriate solutions based on these expectations. The research process examines Istanbul's housing problem, the right to housing, the transformation of households in the metropolis, lifestyles, and alternative households, in addition to the literature review. In addition to the literature review, a survey was conducted, and international exemplary models were examined. The survey facilitated the collection of data on the housing needs and preferences of Y generation individuals in alternative households living in Istanbul. These data, along with the exemplary models, played a fundamental role in determining the interior design model and defining the functions. The proposed interior design model encompasses not only the physical housing structure but also social, economic, and environmental factors. This model aims to create an environment that promotes solidarity among different households. Common spaces and collaborative housing models play a significant role in increasing social interaction, sharing resources, and strengthening community ties. This design model adheres to principles such as sustainability, accessibility, environmental adaptation, and principle-based equality. In conclusion, this thesis aims to offer an innovative approach to the housing problem for alternative households in the Istanbul metropolis, thereby aiming to contribute to social transformation and improve the quality of life. However, further research is required to assess the practical feasibility, economic sustainability, and social acceptance of these proposals. This study serves as a guide for planners, designers, decision-makers, and other stakeholders in the community, encouraging the discussion and development of solutions to this problem. Further research in this field is crucial for the development of a sustainable and inclusive housing policy.
