Abstract (EN)

This research has been conducted in the form of a cross-sectional study in order to reveal the burden and find out the factors associated with burden among caregivers who involve in the home care for their family members, who are at least 65 years old in Bornova district of Izmir. The subject pool comprises 223 individuals above the age of 65, who applied to the home care service of Bornova Municipality; and their 223 family members, who provide them home care. The sociodemographic features of the family have been documented in face-to-face meetings via an evaluation form that addresses information with regards to home care and Zarit caregiver Burden Interview. On the other hand, the sociodemographic features of the care-receivers have been gathered in face-to-face interviews via a survey form that addresses the activity of daily living (ALD) and the instrumental activity of daily living (IADL). In order to carry out this research, legal permissions have been taken both from the Clinical Research Ethical Committee of the Medical Faculty of Ege University and the municipality of Bornova. The data collected in this study have been analyzed in SPSS23.0 software. The average burden of the caregivers have been shown to be 31,95 with a standard deviation of 13,33. Most of the caregivers have been identified as individuals, who are woman, married, with children, with low educational degree, with social security, and housewives. We have found a statistically significant association between the burden of the caregiver family member and the perception of health, quality of sleep, presence of physical and economical problems of the family member, together with the ADL and IADL of the care-receiver. We postulate that providing supportive services for the physical and economical problems of the caregiver family member and interventions that uncouple the ADL and IADL of the care-receiver will decrease the burden up to a substantial extend.
