A conservation proposal for kadikoy recaizade street zisso house

This thesis presents a comprehensive study on the restoration and adaptive reuse of the Zisso House, located on Parcel 4, Block 187, Recaizade Street, Rasimpaşa Neighborhood, Kadıköy District, Istanbul. The research encompasses an analysis of the building's immediate context, historical investigation, measured drawings, material and damage assessments, restitution and restoration proposals, and adaptive reuse recommendations. In the initial phase, the architectural and historical characteristics of the building were evaluated, and relevant sources were reviewed to provide contextual information. Detailed surveying and scanning were conducted to document the current condition of the structure, and measured drawings were prepared based on the collected data. Subsequent material and deterioration analyses were carried out. Through archival research, historical photographs, on-site traces, and comparisons with contemporary examples of civil architecture, restitution proposals were developed for two periods reflecting single-family and multi-family usage. In the subsequent phase, restoration and adaptive reuse strategies were formulated to ensure the preservation of the building under contemporary conditions while sustaining its original characteristics. Proposed functions included residential use and a boutique hotel, compatible with the building's character. The construction of the building is estimated to have taken place between 1906 and 1913, although information regarding the architect remains unknown. The thesis is organized into six chapters. Chapter One outlines the objectives, scope, and methodology. Chapter Two provides a detailed analysis of the surrounding context, including street fabric, monumental structures, and examples of civil architecture. Chapter Three presents a comprehensive evaluation of the existing condition, including spatial organization, façade characteristics, construction techniques, structural system, material properties, and observed deterioration, documented through analytical measured drawings. Chapter Four details the two- period restitution based on archival sources, structural traces, and analogies. Chapter Five presents restoration interventions and adaptive reuse proposals in line with conservation principles. Finally, Chapter Six evaluates the study, highlighting the cultural value of the surrounding area, the preservation of traditional residential typologies, and the significance of the Zisso House within the historical fabric of Rasimpaşa Neighborhood and Kadıköy.
