Determination of the ecosystem type model of the Cappadocia Region

Ordination methods (such as PCA, DCA, etc.) are used currently to quantitatively identify the determining factors which characterize habitats and have a greater impact on the habitat than other ecological factors have. According to habitat classification system of EUNIS (European Nature Information System), there are too many habitats pending identification in Türkiye. This study aims to identify the habitat types in Cappadocia region, which is included in UNESCO's World Heritage List and renowned worldwide for its peculiar geological formations known as fairy chimneys. Identifying the habitat types of Cappadocia region, and in particular, registering them in EUNIS (European Nature Information System) habitat classification system are needed to conserve the area as a priority and transferring them to future generations. In order to identify the habitat types in the region, the results of previous studies were combined with field observation data, followed by geological, edaphic, climatic and anthropogenic evaluations, which revealed that the determining factor of habitat types in the region is the erosion of tuff material due to the region's geological structure. Habitat types have been identified and shown on the map according to this factor. It is considered that the habitat types identified will contribute to the conserving the naturality of Cappadocia region which is currently under anthropogenic pressure. In addition, the thesis study represents the first study that uses bryophytes as a separator of habitats within a smaller area where habitats are intertwined with each other. This thesis study will guide future methods that may be employed in similar areas designated as a priority for conservation.
