The effect of karaoke activities on the fluent reading skills and attitudes towards reading of second grade primary school students

In this study, it was aimed to examine whether karaoke activities have an effect on the fluent reading skills and attitudes towards reading of primary school second grade students. For this purpose, in the 2023-2024 academic year, a 6-week study was carried out with 48 second-grade students studying in two primary schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in Niğde. In this study, there were 2 groups as experimental group (n:25) and control group (n:23). While karaoke activities were applied to the experimental group, no intervention was made to the control group. A sequential explanatory design, one of the mixed methods, was used in the study. In the quantitative part of the study, an unequalized control group design, which is a quasi-experimental design, was used. As a data collection tool, reading speed formula, correct reading formula, Prosodic Reading Scale, Reading Attitude Survey with "Garfield" Picture for 1-6th Grade, semi-structured interview form and researcher diary were used. From the data collection tools, reading speed formula, correct reading formula, Prosodic Reading Scale, Reading Attitude Survey with "Garfield" Picture for 1-6th Grade was applied to the experimental and control groups as pre-test and post-test. In the qualitative part of the research, an explanatory case study was used. In the qualitative part of the research, a researcher diary was kept during the research process, and at the end of the application, student opinions were taken for the application. In the analysis of the research, SPSS 27 package program was used for quantitative data and content analysis method was used for qualitative data. It was determined that karaoke activities positively affected the correct reading rate and prosodic reading and attitudes towards from the fluent reading components of the students, but these effects did not differ according to gender.
