Abstract (EN)

Ergogenic effects of carbohydrate and caffeine 'mouth rinse' method on sports performance are one of the most interesting issues in sports sciences in recent years. It is thought that this method activates chemoreceptors in the tongue and oral cavity and stimulates the centers involved in reward, motivation and regulation of motor activity in the brain. In literature, there are few studies on a "carbohydrate (CH) mouth rinse" and "caffeine (CAF) mouth rinse" methods especially on anaerobic performance, and there is no study on its effect on repetitive jump performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of mouth rinse of CH (6% maltodextrin solution), CAF (1.2% caffeine solution), and CH (6%) and CAF (1.2%) combination solution on repeated jumping performance in trained athletes. This laboratory study has a repetitive, single-blind, placebo-controlled and crossover design. National and international level 8 male participants (mean ages 22,3 year) competing in power sports participated in the study voluntarily. The athletes came to the laboratory in fasting condition with a total of 5 times with a minimum of 24- hour intervals between 8.00-11.00 am for familiarization and test sessions. One of the 4 different solutions of 25 ml consisting of CH, CAF, placebo (saccharin) or CH +CAF combination solution was rinsed in the mouth for 10 seconds, followed by a 30 sec repeated vertical jump test twice with 5 min interval. The peak power output, vertical jump height (H), heart rate, blood lactate level (LA), fatigue index (FI) and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) of the repeated jump tests for different application sessions were compared. There was a significant difference for Hmin, Hmean, RPE in CAF, CH, CH+CAF; for FI in CAF and CH applications between repeated jump tests (p <0.05). Two-way ANOVA results showed no significant interaction in 4 × 2 (Application × Jump Series) repeated measurements. The results showed that the mouth rinse methods of CAF, CH and CH + CAF did not have a positive effect on successive repeated jump performance.
