Kar'i art classical binding application

The art of Katı' (cut-paper or cut-leather work), which is an heirloom from our ancestors, dates back centuries. It was called "Paper Carving" in Turkish and was called Katı' in the Arabic language. This term was also used by the Ottomans and this decoration technique has a significant role in the field of Traditional Turkish Arts. When the extant sources and samples are examined thoroughly, it is revealed that the pioneers of this art style outside the Chinese world were not applied as paper carving, but as leather carving. In this context, it is aimed to create a source document and maintain its continuity in order to transfer it to future generations through examples and practices. The book covers, reflecting the aesthetic beauty of the manuscripts as well as being the preserver of them, increase the artistic value of the manuscripts with the Katı' Art decorations. Hence, these works are protected in museums, libraries, and private collections. Being one of the most distinguished branches of Traditional Turkish Arts, the art of Katı' has almost no publications on its work of Binding(Cover) Art. Thus, in this study, the implementation of Katı' Art on Binding(Cover) Art is examined. Under the title of Binding(Cover) Art, the definition of Binding(Cover) Art, its sections, and decoration techniques are explained and under the Katı' Art title, the definition of Katı' Art, its types, and the materials used are discussed. In the practice part, a piece of artwork with Rumi patterns on classic leather is formed by leather carving.
