ABSTRACTMaster ThesisEFFECTS OF (+)-CATECHIN ON THE SOME BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS INDIFFERENT TISSUES OF WISTAR RATS OF OVARIECTOMIZED AND EXPOSUREEFFECT OF POTASSIUM BROMATESevgi IRTEGUNFirat UniversityGraduate School of Natural and Applied SciencesDepartment of Biology2006, Page: 59In this study, effects of (+)-catechin were examined on the levels of lipophilic vitamins, cholesterol, vitamin C and fatty acids in serum, erythrocyte, brain, liver, kidney and lung tissuesof Wistar rats ovariectomized and exposure effect of potassium bromate. The serum cholesterol level was increased in the KBrO3 group (p<0,001). The levels ofα-tocopherol, vitamins C and D2 were increased in the KBrO3 and C+KBrO3 groups. In theerythrocytes, the levels of α-tocopherol and α-tocopherol acetate were decreased in the KBrO3and C+KBrO3 groups (P<0,01).The cholesterol level in brain tissue was decreased in the C+KBrO3 group. However, the vitamin C level was increased in the KBrO3 and C+KBrO3 groups (p<0.001). Althoughlinoleic acid was decreased in the C+KBrO3 groups, arachidonic acid was increased (p<0,001).α-tocopherol level in liver was decreased in the C+KBrO3 group while the vitamin C level wasincreased in the KBrO3 group (p<0,001), but in the C+KBrO3 group was lower than that of theKBrO3 group (p<0,04). Although palmitic, stearic and arachidonic acids were increased in theKBrO3 and C+KBrO3 groups (0,001), oleic acid was decreased (p<0,002).The α-tocopherol and cholesterol levels in kidney were increased in the KBrO3 andC+KBrO3 groups (p<0.001). Stearic and arachidonic acids were increased in the KBrO3 whilepalmitic acid was decreased (p<0,001). Cholesterol and vitamin C levels in the lung wereincreased in the KBrO3 group, but in the C+KBrO3 was lower than that of the KBrO3 group(p<0,001). Linoleic, arachidonic, docosapentaenoic and docosahekxaenoic acids were increasedin the C+KBrO3 group (p<0,001). In conclusion, it has been shown that (+)-catechin hasdifferent effects on some biochemical parameters in tissues.Key words: (+)-catechin, ovariectomized, Wistar rat, potassium bromate, lipophilic vitamins, cholesterol, fatty acid, kidney, liver, brain.III
