Abstract (EN)

This doctoral research aims to develop original and value-added products by integrating the cultural, geographical, and architectural elements of the Mersin region into contemporary jewelry design. Conducted from the perspective of cultural sustainability, the study involves the reinterpretation of traditional motifs, architectural details, and local symbols in line with modern design principles. Within the scope of the research, cultural values specific to Mersin were thematically analyzed and transformed into contemporary forms through the method of abstraction, which were then transferred into the design process. Aesthetic, symbolic, and functional aspects were considered collectively, and original jewelry designs were created with attention to collection integrity. Methodologically, the study based on qualitative research design was conducted through document analysis and design process. The effect of cultural identity on design was examined, and the conceptual basis of each design was explained. 14 carat gold preferred in the collection was used as a strategic material due to its technical and economic suitability in the Turkish jewelry sector. The design process aimed not only at formal production but also at transforming cultural narratives into a form of artistic expression. The resulting collection seeks to establish an emotional and cultural connection with individuals and holds the potential to contribute to the creative industries by uniting local values with universal aesthetics. In conclusion, this study reveals that the integration of cultural heritage with contemporary design provides not only an aesthetic approach but also a strategic value in terms of economic and social sustainability.
