Investigation of effectiveness on concept cartoons supported science education

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of concept cartoons on science education on 7th grade students in elementary school in the Science lesson Human and Environment unit. For this purpose the embedded design which is one of mixed methods designs has been used in the current study. The research was conducted in the second semester of 2017-2018 academic year and was carried out with 38 students and 19 control groups in the 7th grade students in a private school in Nilüfer, Bursa. In the control group, the lessons were taught in line with the existing Science Lesson Curriculum, while in the experimental group, the lessons were supported by concept cartoons. ''Science Achievement Test " was applied to the experimental and control group students as pre-test and post-test. In addition, interviews were conducted with 9 students in experimental group students in order to determine the students' views about the method. According to quantitative results from the research; it was found that there was no statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the experimental and control group students' achievement test. With respect to qualitative results, it was stated that with concept cartoons the attention towards the lesson increased and made the lessons more fun and the learning more permanent. According to the results of the study, suggestions were made about the use of concept cartoons in science lesson.
