Monitoring of Beta vulgaris L. (sugar beet) plant grown inKayseri Yeşilhisar district for trace element amount and heavy metal accumulation

In this study, sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) plant collected from 6 different localities, 5 different regions (Kilcan , Kesik, Hacılımezarlığı, Kıraç Tepe, Hacıbektaş) and the control area (Dağılgan) in Yeşilhisar district of Kayseri, had leaves, stems, roots and growing areas. Heavy metal (Cr, Zn, Fe, Cu, Co, Cd, Ni, Mn, Pb and As) contents of soil samples were analyzed using ICP-MS device. The obtained results were compared according to the limit values of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Soil Control Regulation. In sugar beet; Cr concentration 1,04 – 5,23 µggˉ¹, Mn concentration 12,15 – 78,96 µggˉ¹, Fe concentration 24,73 – 390,66 µggˉ¹, Co concentration 0 µggˉ¹ -1,43 µggˉ¹, Ni concentration 1,13 – 32 ,64 µggˉ¹, Cu concentration 1,02 – 14,78 µggˉ¹, Zn concentration 10,13 -104,26 µggˉ¹, As concentration 0 – 3,67 µggˉ¹, Cd concentration 0 – 0,45 µggˉ¹ and Pb concentration 0,02 –1,85 µggˉ¹ it was determined between. However, sugar beet in the collected samples shows pollution in terms of heavy metals regardless of the soils collected. While the lowest pollution rate was in the control group, it was determined that the least pollution was in the soils in the experimental group. According to these results, it was concluded that some metals (Cd and Pb) in sugar beet plant do not exceed the limit value according to WHO and Soil control regulations.
