Abstract (EN)
The modality, whose origin is based on Aristotle, was first discussed in philosophy and logic. The contributions of philosophy and logic to the concept of modality have also opened the door to linguistic modality studies. In linguistic studies, modality has been evaluated in terms of reflecting the speaker's attitude through grammatical and discursive elements. This situation caused the modality to be at the center of semantic studies. Researchers have used logical, typological, semantic and pragmatic approaches in modality studies. Palmer (2001) handled the modality with a typological approach and made a classification based on the propositional-event modality categories. Palmer's (2001) classification has been frequently preferred by other researchers as it contains many semantic categories. This study aims to determine in which modality category the propositions determined from Kemal Tahir's Esir Şehir Trilogy are marked by which modality markers. For this purpose, modalities in the study were handled by using Palmer's (2001) modality classification, and other modality categories, which were determined based on the findings and not included in Palmer's (2001) classification, were also examined under separate headings. The study consists of five main parts as "Introduction, Conceptual Framework, Findings, Discussions and Comments, Conclusion and Recommendations". In the first part of the study, issues such as the problem, purpose and importance, method and limitations of the thesis are mentioned. In the second part, modality, modality and other verb categories, modality markers, modality studies, classifications, categories and modality categories in Palmer's (2001) classification are discussed. In the third chapter, the propositions determined from the Esir Şehir Trilogy are categorized under separate headings, taking into account Palmer's (2001) modality classification, and other categories not included in Palmer's (2001) classification. In the fourth chapter, the similarities and differences between the findings of the study and other studies are stated. In the fifth chapter, the results obtained from the study are evaluated. It is thought that this study will contribute to modality studies.
