The effect of cognitive behavioral therapy based psychoeducation on anger management and death anxiety in individuals receiving chemotherapy

Aim: This study was conducted to analyze the effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-based psychoeducation on anger control and death anxiety in individuals receiving chemotherapy. Material and Method: The research was carried out between February 2022 and June 2023 in Batman Training and Research Hospital Chemotherapy Unit as an experimental study with pretest-posttest control group. The study was completed with 80 individuals (40 controls, 40 experiments) receiving chemotherapy. The Personal Information Form, the Controlled Anger Scale and the Death Anxiety Scale were used to collect the data. The individuals in the experimental group were given 8 sessions of CBTbased psychoeducation. No intervention was made in the control group. Percentage distribution, chi-square test, and t test for dependent and independent groups were used in the analysis of the data. Results: The level of anger control (24.67±2.74) after the CBT-based psychoeducation of the individuals in the experimental group who received chemotherapy increased compared to the anger control (17.20±4.52) level of the individuals in the control group who received chemotherapy, and the level of death anxiety (6.72±0.98) of the individuals in the control group who received chemotherapy It was determined that death anxiety decreased compared to the level of death anxiety (8.00±1.45). In the study, it was determined that the difference between the anger scale and death anxiety scale pretest and posttest total scores of individuals in the experimental group of CBT-based psychoeducation who received chemotherapy was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: CBT-based psychoeducation; It was determined that individuals who received chemotherapy increased their anger control levels and decreased their death anxiety levels. It can be suggested that CBT-based psychoeducation be used as a professional method to support the mental health of individuals in psychiatric nursing and psychooncology practices.
