Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this research is to scrutinize the recent findings revealed through certain excavations carried out at "Klazomenai Ağaçlı Yol Necropolis" discovered by a group of archeologists from Izmir Museum Management who have completed the drilling and excavating activities at Klazomenai, one of the twelve Ionian cities in Urla at the specific point of map section 20, block 66 and parcel 65 in three phases of operation because of the hindrance brought about by certain climatic inconveniences. A total of 67 drillings each of which is 3x4 m in full compliance with the topographic specifications of an area of 5423 m2 within the third level archeological site boundaries have been carried out. Some of the boreholes have been widened, connected, and deepened based on the particular conditions of the findings. Several graves found in depths of around 2 m. deserve herein to be mentioned in further details: One of these graves shaped like an earthenwared bathtub dated back to early 7th century BC (based on dating the earthenwared Kotyle found within its body) could be one of the earliest funeraries so far found within the Klazomenai Necropolis. Two other considerable graves are monumental tombs, dated back to mid Albertinum era. Still another finding of significance in this particular area is the back band of an earthenwared monumental tomb which is dated back to late Albertinum era. Another grave dated back to Hellenistic era and made of limestone with monolithic cover is another imporant finding reached through this excavation. Several wares again dated back to Hellenistic era in one of which a Klazomenai coin has been found are also important findings gained/uncovered through this research. Some grave gifts found are also worth getting emphasized: 4 bronze objects shaped like hoofs, a pair of glass object and 1 astragalos bone which has Greek scripts on it. Around some of the graves found at the Necropolis, some bases of enclosure wall and some series of earthenware pipes dated to Ottoman period have also been found in diverse depths and direction. There are still some parts at Klazomenai where excavation operations have not been completed. Further studies, drillings and excavations at the mentioned point are thought and hoped to carry on archeological investigations, raise the existing findings to upper points and research the present grave traditions at Klazomenai from new viewpoints and put forward further detailed evaluations and interpretations.
