Investigation of the outdoor space uses of housing (MASS) settlement in terms of social interaction: A case of study of Atakent TOKI mass housing (Ankara)

ABSTRACTSpaces and social relationships are gradually changing with the rapid urbanisation. Social interaction and people?s keeping contact with each other and with their environment bring about cultural, behavioural and satisfactory exchanges and the space, at that point, has an important role. According to the studies, socialisation on the spatial scale starts in the residence and/or house concerning family relations; however, concerning social relations (with other people), it starts within the immediate environment of the residence. In this context, outdoor usages, which can also be called the immediate environment of the residence, is an important subject from the aspect of social interaction. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the role of the outdoor usages in TOKİ Atakent Site in the social interaction, to analyse all the factors affecting the social interaction during that stage, to show the present situation concerning the outdoor usages and to put forward suggestions to develop the social interaction within the immediate environment of the residence. For that purpose, first of all, theoretical basis were put forward, territorial and questionnaire studies were carried out. During the process of territorial studies, the present situation concerning the outdoor usages in the study area were put forward, the landscape projects were updated and the outdoor usages were evaluated. During the process of questionnaire studies, a questionnaire study was carried out to demonstrate the relationship between human-space-social interaction in the study area. The questionnaire was carried out between November 2011-March 2012 with %95 reliability level and 0,05 sampling error to 680 people with random selection and face-to-face method. The questionnaire form is composed of 29 questions and 3 parts ( I. Part: questions about the demographical features of the users; II. Part: questions concerning resident choice, residential outdoor usage, satisfaction and efficiency, interactions with neighbours; III. Part: a question with which 37 variables were analysed to social interaction). The results of the questionnaire were transferred to electronic environment with SPSS 18.00 program. The data set ( the data) were analysed with descriptive statistics, Factor Analysis and Unidirectional (Anova Variance Analysis). The data showed that the users? satisfaction concerning the outdoor usages in the site isn?t enough, they don?t think the outdoor usages are enough, this situation affects the outdoor usages negatively and, therefore, the outdoor usages can?t play an effective role in the social interaction. As a result of the study, some suggestions were put forward to develop (reinforce) the role of the outdoor usages in Atakent site in the social interaction.Keywords: Person, Social Interaction, Space, Outdoor Usages, Ankara.
