Kosovo - Serbia conflict and the mediation role of Türkiye for resolution

According to the Ahtisaari Plan and a UN Resolution, the Assembly of Kosovo unilaterally proclaimed its independence on February 17, 2008. However, Serbia still claims Kosovo to be its territory. A resolution process was launched under the EU's intervention in try to normalize relations between these two countries. However, tension between Serbia and Kosovo have constantly ups and downs in the northern area of Kosovo, where Serbs are concentrated. As regional peace and stability became critical global concerns, Türkiye has emerged as a prominent actor actively engaging in conflict resolution efforts. Because Türkiye shares historical and cultural connections with Kosovo as well as bilateral economic and commercial relationships with Serbia. This thesis explores the reasons and background of this reemerged tension between Serbia and Kosovo and aims to discover Türkiye's role for the process through mediation approaches and theories. The research is conducted by a qualitative approach, incorporating interviews with key stakeholder and elites including academics, government officials, policy makers from diverse backgrounds, encompassing Albanian, Turkish, and Serbian perspectives. By understanding the factors that contribute to tensions and assessing Türkiye's mediation efforts, the study provides valuable insight into promoting a peaceful resolution of the Serbia-Kosovo conflict. Therefore, this study can provide a beneficial recommendation for preventing further escalation of hostilities in the region.
