Secret representations in the Qur'ān

This study aims to examine the nature and function of kāmin (implicit or hidden) figurative expression in the Qur'ān. The primary objective of the research is to reveal how indirect, metaphorical, and symbolic expressions in the Qur'ān particularly those describing abstract and psychological states are conveyed through more concrete imagery. Kāmin expression is approached as a significant literary method employed in the Qur'ān to make meaning more memorable in the mind of the audience. The study first explains the lexical and terminological meanings of the word kāmin, then focuses on its place in Arabic rhetoric (balāgha). Throughout the research, examples of symbolic expression in the Qur'ān were identified and analyzed in detail, using both classical exegeses (such as those by al-Ṭabarī, al-Zamakhsharī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, al-Bayḍāwī etc.) and modern interpretations. The main finding of the study is that kāmin expression is especially used to describe unseen, emotional, and psychological conditions. This method helps to make abstract ideas more understandable by grounding them in human experience. For example, God's closeness to His servants is represented metaphorically through human actions like "running"; similarly, unknown realms and concepts are visualized through familiar images. In conclusion, the implicit figurative expressions found in the Qur'ān do not only enrich the literary style but also enhance the effectiveness, clarity, and permanence of its message. Thus, this narrative style plays a central role in the accurate understanding and interpretation of the Qur'ān.
