Abstract (EN)

Carbon storage and sequestration process for the study area located at the Eastern Mediterranean Basin of Turkey was modelled within the frame of "Ecosystem Services" in this study. Terrestrial carbon storage and sequestration service for each unit area was mapped through carbon dynamics including; (i) above ground biomass carbon, (ii) below ground biomass carbon, (iii) soil organic carbon and (iv) litterfall carbon, with the support of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS). Future Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) (2025-2055) was modelled considering the change trends of past LULC (1990-2003) and present LULC (2014) during the estimation of carbon sequestration process. Social cost of one ton CO2 emitted to the atmosphere as result of anthropogenic activities was estimated for Turkey using Regional Integrated Model of Climate and Economy (RICE) to determine the economic value of carbon storage and sequestration which considered as climate regulation service in the ES hierarchy. In the final stage of this research, carbon storage and sequestration services were modelled through Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) approach by incorporating the carbon pools, current-future LULC and SCC outputs.
