IV ABSTRACT INSTITUTIONAL ISOMORPHISM, MARKETS, FIRM RESOURCES, AND BUSINESS GROUP CORPORATE DIVERSIFICATION IN EMERGING ECONOMIES: A STUDY OF TURKISH BUSINESS GROUPS Bahattin KARADEMİR Ph.D. Thesis, Department of Business Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Hüseyin ÖZGEN Co-advisor: Prof. Dr. Richard N. OSBORN September 2004, 164 pages This study focuses on business group corporate diversification patterns of Turkish Business Groups. For the purposes of this study, three stream of works which are institutional-based, market-based, and resource-based view of the business groups are reviewed. The institutional-based view emphasizes role of institutions in the emergence and the functioning of the business groups. The market-based view emphasizes the role of markets in the emergence and the functioning of business groups. The resource-based view emphasizes role of organizational assets in the emergence and functioning of the business groups. In general research results provide support for the relationships between institutional context, markets, organizational resources, and business group corporate diversification. Diversification level of the business groups established in different institutional time periods varies due to the institutional settings differed between these periods. Business groups that have emerged after liberalization are less diversified than those that have been founded under state-domination. Diversification level of the business groups varies by the existence of a bank within the business group. Diversification level of business groups is positively associated with the size of business groups. Diversification level of business groups is directly associated with the time business groups are founded. Finally, implications of the research are discussed.
