In the Republic period (1923-1950), political, economic and socio-cultural life in the Kutahya city

Kütahya, which is the center of establishment and liberation, has been an important settlement in the Anatolian geography from past to present. In addition to its distinguished geographical features, reasons such as its vast historical background, its location as an administrative center before and after the Turkish domination, they have always been the elements that make this ancient city valuable. A lot of research has been done, and general and specific studies have been put forward, dealing with these riches of the city from both economic and socio-cultural aspects. However, it has been observed that there are a limited number of works written on the Republican Period history of the city of Kütahya. Since this subject is seen as an important need, it has been chosen with the main aim of filling the gap in the field. This study is valuable in terms of serving this purpose. In the early years of the Republic, with the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, there was a transition period in the civil administrative area in this city and transfer decisions were taken for some villages regarding the administrative division of the city. Governors and mayors who served in the city of Kütahya during the Single Party Period were handled separately and their activities were investigated. The information and documents obtained from the Archive of the Ministry of Interior contributed to the rewriting of the administrative structure of this city. The Republican People's Party, which was one of the political parties in Kütahya during this period, information about the city organization of this party was mainly obtained from the Presidency of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey State Archives Archive and the organizational structure of this party in this city has been evaluated according to the inspection reports. As in the Ottoman Period, the economic structure of the city of Kütahya was based on agriculture. While grain production has an important place in agriculture; In the field of animal husbandry, sheep and cattle breeding came to the fore. in connection with agriculture, industrial branches developed in this city; the soil industry formed the most important industrial branches of the city. These industries were followed by the forest and mining industry. The importance of the Kütahya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which is one of the indispensable commercial institutions of agriculture and industry, has emerged. The very valuable archive of the Chamber had the opportunity to be introduced with this study and its undeniable importance in the creation of the city's economic chronology became evident. Limited and joint stock companies and banks, which are commercial elements, have been the other economic issues discussed in this study. In this city, in addition to primary and secondary schools, one of Turkey's important high schools was opened in this period. Towards the end of the Single Party Period, the formal education field was enriched with educational institutions such as the Girls' Vocational Institute and the Boys' Art School. In the field of non-formal education, respectively, Public Courses, Nation Schools, Ulus Schools and Public Reading Rooms were opened. While dealing with the cultural life of this city, printing houses, libraries, museums, newspapers and magazines were emphasized and the subject of Kütahya Community Center could be examined in depth with the information obtained from the local press. As a result, in these lands, where the War of Independence was won, the political and economic developments and active social life with the transition to the Republic were investigated in depth at the academic level with this study. In the study, mainly first hand documents were used. Today, it is thought that this study will contribute to solving the problems related to the city.
