Abstract (EN)
This study examines the role of language policies in the construction and preservation of Gagauz identity in ATU Gagauzia, an autonomous region of the Republic of Moldova. Known for its ethnic diversity, Moldova is home to several ethnic groups, among which the Gagauz, a group of Turkish origin and Orthodox Christian, hold a unique position. Their language, Gagauz, serves both as a marker of identity and as a tool for cultural preservation in the face of modernization and globalization pressures. This research draws on theoretical frameworks such as Benedict Anderson's concept of the "imagined community," Pierre Bourdieu's idea of "linguistic capital," and David Crystal's reflections on language death. It analyzes the historical and legal context of the region, highlighting the educational, media, and administrative policies implemented to support the Gagauz language, while also exploring the limitations of these policies. Furthermore, it addresses Türkiye's contributions to the promotion of the Gagauz language and culture.
