Examination of latin letters structural anatomy

Writing is an innovation that has evolved throughout our history. It is the most convenient way to express our thoughts. Writing is not only a way of communication it is turning point of an symbolic thought becoming a reality. First writing was found when humankind settled. This innovation which is the beginning of visual communication has shown us signs of civilization with cave drawings and cuneiform.The evolution of typography started from Johannes Gutenberg's innovation of printing press in the 15th century contiuned through industrial revolution to visual communication and now with technology it will keep improving with the innovation of new typographic movements. In 20th century new typographic designs, improved techniques, the features which separate different letters, differences and progress in arts have all directed the typographic design. In time typography professionals of letters in alphabets and graphic designers have developed letter terminology where we can see the skeleton structure of an letter. In this thesis, the characteristics of a letter, anatomic structure, geometry, contrast, differences in optimal balance and emphasis, Serif and Sans Serif font are examined.Key Words: History of Writing, Alphabet, Typography, Anatomy of a Letter.
