Structure of logistics industry and solutions for the problems in the sector (İstanbul sample)

This study was conducted to determine the status of the logistics sector in Turkey day by day. Logistics in Turkey is in what stage according to the world market, the effects of the problems encountered in the sector and its solutions, and detecting the lacks of logistics are aimed. Firstly, basic information about logistics is given and the role of logistic sector in world economy is mentioned. Then the dynamical structure of logistics is examined and the level of competence of the existing infrastructure is investigated. Transportation systems are introduced generally in all around the world and the strategic and technological position of Turkey were discussed. In the next section, about the main problems logistic sector faced in Turkey are given. After that a survey is made with leading 79 companies of the industry to examine the situation of logistics companies in Turkey. With this study, types of transportations used by the companies, capital structure, the activities they serve, education of employees, logistics costs, the products they transport, information technology they use and the problems they face were examined. At the end, case analysis was conducted with examining all the data collected during the study period. In line with the analysis carried out, it has also offered solutions for the future. According to the results of the work carried out, many companies operating in Turkey reveal a very successful business, although the inadequate use of technology in their studies, the inadequate number of qualified staff, the lack of the necessary transport infrastructure and bureaucratic problems. It is believed that the difference between the advanced countries in education and technology fields and Turkey will be closed easily with technological investments and development of transport infrastructure than ensuring calibration between modes of transport and supports and investments of governments.
