Assessment of the attention deficit and hyperactivity symptoms among the inpatients being treated for substance dependence at the hospital

The aim of the study was to investigate the attention deficit and hyperactivity symptoms in the patients who were being treated for substance dependence at the hospital. The sample group of the study consisted of 100 male patients who were hospitalized in a private foundation hospital in Istanbul and were determined on a random and voluntary basis. Substance Use Profile Index-Short Form (BAPI-Kısa) developed by Ogel et al. (2015), Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Self-Report Scale (ASRS) developed by Kessler et al. (2005), and a sociodemographic form which is developed by the investigator were used in this research. The results of the study showed that there were statistically significant relationships between the severity of addiction and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder symptoms (p<.05), attention deficit symptoms (p<.05) and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms (p<.05). Thus, the severity of addiction was increasing by the levels of addiction symptoms, hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms and/or attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder symptoms. The results discussed in the light of the current literature.
