The effect of inflammatory and nutritional factors on survival in patients with malignant mesothelioma

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an aggressive, late-diagnosed tumor. Inflammation plays a major role in its pathophysiology. As with any cancer, malnutrition is known to be common in MPM. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between inflammatory and nutritional factors and survival in malignant mesothelioma disease. Our study was conducted on 102 patients as a single center and retrospective. 44 of the patients were female and 58 were male (female/male ratio 0.75). We found the mean age at diagnosis of the patients to be 60,5. The median overall survival (OSS) of the patients in our study was 14 months. According to the pathological subtypes, non-epiteloid subtypes have negative effects on GSS (p=0.005), tumor surgery procedure of the patients has a positive effect on GSS (p=0.000), high platelet value (p=0.0143), low albumin value (p <0.0001), high NLR value (p= 0.0007), high PLR value (p <0.0001), high MLR value (p= 0.0001), high SII value (p <0.0001), high PIV value (p <0.0001), low PNI value (p <0.0001) were associated with worse OSS. Since the treatment decision may change in patients with MPM, we recommend that the nutritional and inflammatory indices be examined first and the treatment decision taken after determining the prognosis.
