The effect of storytelling technique on aesthetic listening skills of middle school students

In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of storytelling technique on aesthetic listening skills of secondary school students. In this study, a quasi-experimental design with pre-test post-test control group was used. The research was carried out with 6th grade students studying in a secondary school in Pendik district of Istanbul province. The study was implemented in the second semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. The lessons were conducted by the researcher in both experimental and control groups. The fairy tale texts used in the study were determined in line with the opinions of the researcher, experts and Turkish teachers. There were a total of 61 students in the study group. These two classes were randomly determined and divided into two groups, one as the experimental group and the other as the control group. The experimental group consists of 30 students and the control group consists of 31 students. The study consists of 34 female and 27 male students. The research lasted for 9 weeks. Before the application, the students in both groups were told fairy tales, a listening comprehension achievement test was applied and the pre-test data were formed with the answers given. In the experimental phase of the research, aesthetic listening strategies were taught to the students in the experimental group with fairy tales. The students in the experimental group were told 5 fairy tales with the fairy tale narration technique. Listening comprehension achievement test was applied and post-test data were formed with the answers given. SPSS package programme was used to analyse the quantitative data obtained in the study. As a result of the research, it was found that the students in the experimental group who were taught aesthetic listening strategies with fairy tales had higher listening comprehension achievement test scores than the students in the control group and the difference was found to be significant. According to these results, it was seen that teaching aesthetic listening strategies with fairy tales contributed positively to the development of listening skills of the students in the experimental group.
