Abstract (EN)

In mastoid surgery performed by drilling; it is aimed to determine the effects on the auditory system at an early stage and to take precautions by checking whether there is a significant hearing difference, especially at high frequencies, in the third month before and after surgery. A total of 27 patients, including 9 women (33.3%) and 18 men (66.7%), who aged between 10 and 69 were planned to have mastoid surgery were included in this study. 40.7% of the participants underwent surgery on the right ear and 59.3% on the left ear. The participants were evaluated with pure voice audiometry, speech audiometry and high frequency audiometry in the preoperative period. The same participants were examined in detail again in the postoperative period, third month, and checked for changes in hearing with test repetitions. With the data obtained, demographic characteristics such as age, gender were proportional and the right-left ear hearing thresholds, including preop and postop, were statistically compared. This study was conducted to determine whether high frequencies between 9000-16000 Hz cause hearing loss in mastoid surgery practice. Since there were no significant differences in the comparison of high-frequency hearing thresholds before and after surgery in the right and left ear for all measurement intensities (p>0.05), it was found that there were no significant differences. Accordingly, the averages before and after the operation were considered equal. However, since the left ear 1000 Hz frequency values of the airline measurements were compared pre-op and post-op, p<0.05, a significant difference can be seen. Considering that 59.3% of the participants underwent surgery on the left ear, it is believed that the surgery performed contributed to the improvement of hearing. The obtained data, supports the view that mastoid surgery and the drill sound used in surgery do not have a negative, permanent effect on hearing in high frequencies.
