Investigation of values which are highlighted in the mathematics education program in secondary school mathematics lesson books

In this study, the status of the values emphasized in the mathematics curriculum renewed in 2017 in the middle school mathematics textbooks was examined. The study is designed with the document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research methods. The mathematics textbooks decided by the Ministry of National Education to be taught in secondary schools in 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 academic years constitute the documents of the research. Textbooks were determined by purposeful sampling method. The data obtained from the text books by document analysis technique were subjected to descriptive analysis. The values to be researched in the textbooks are limited to the values of "justice and sharing, scientific, flexibility, aesthetics, equality and thriftless", which are associated with mathematics gains in the 2017 mathematics curriculum. According to the findings obtained from the research, it was seen that the most common value in the textbooks was the value of equality. After the equality value, the values of scientific and flexibility. It can be said that the least included values in the textbooks: esthetics, thriftless, justice and sharing. Based on these findings, it can be recommended to book authors to consider values education as well as mathematical skills while preparing the contents of the textbooks. It is recommended that mathematics teachers make practices to consider values education while using textbooks.
