The construction of the masculinity in media: "The program of Zuhal Topal'la Sofrada"

Gender has a significant role in the process of identity acquisition and subjectification on the social plane. This role is actually the result of a cultural structure. The social order encodes certain forms of behavior and thinking for the sexes. These codes, in essence, refer to the rules of power and the norms that it deems appropriate for individuals. In order to ensure the continuity of the patriarchal system, power constructs the subject discursively with reference to Foucault. During this construction, the values and "norms" of society are taken as a basis. The formation of gender is shaped according to the structure of society. In this context, the study draws attention to the central position of concepts such as power, subject, discourse in the gender structure based on the views of Judith Butler and Michel Foucault and focuses on the construction of hegemonic masculinity. In the study, it is aimed to reveal the patriarchal discourse reproduced through the media and to analyze the construction of masculinity. The sample of the study is the program Zuhal Topal'la Sofrada (2018) broadcast on Fox Tv. The selected sections were examined by the method of feminist critical discourse analysis. The findings obtained reveal that the media is a reinforcer of patriarchal ideology. In the program, masculinity is reproduced due to femininity and reinforced through masculine discourses.
