Analysis of the motifs on Mehmet Aga Mosque tiles i̇n terms of color, pattern and composition

Mehmet Ağa Mosque is a significant example that reflects the Ottoman artistic sensibility through its refined architecture and decorative arts. This study aims to present a detailed analysis of the mosque's interior tile decoration, focusing on color and compositional features. These tiles are particularly important as they bring together the distinctive characteristics of İznik and Kütahya—two major centers of Ottoman tile production—and include rare examples from the Tekfur Palace period. The mosque's patron, Mehmet Ağa, embodied a vision that preserved this aesthetic and cultural heritage. While some of the tiles in the mosque's interior and exterior were brought from Kütahya and Tekfur Palace—establishing a historical link with later periods—the İznik tiles represent the artistic style and technical excellence of the classical period. With their vivid colors, intricate patterns, and balanced compositions, these tiles serve not only as visual artworks but also as historical documents conveying the cultural and artistic values of their time. This study provides an in-depth examination of the aesthetic and compositional features of the motifs found on the mosque's tiles and evaluates their place, meaning, and significance within the historical context of Ottoman art. Mehmet Ağa Mosque is approached not merely as a place of worship, but as a cultural heritage site that transmits the artistic legacy of the past into the present. This analysis aims to contribute to the field of art history and raise awareness about the preservation of this unique legacy. It is hoped that the study will serve as a reference for future research on the mosque and offer a fresh contribution to the existing literature.
