The effect of auditory stimuli on pain and physiological parameters during aspiration in children with mechanical ventilators

This study is a randomized controlled experimental study conducted to determine the effect of parental voice and music sound on pain and physiological parameters during aspiration procedure in children with mechanical ventilation support in the pediatric intensive care unit. The research was carried out in Marmara University Pendik Training Research Hospital and Istanbul Medeniyet University Göztepe Training and Research Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Units. The research data were collected between September 2018 and May 2019. The sample of the study consisted of 84 patients (28 parental voice groups, 28 music voice groups and 28 control groups) according to the power analysis. Data were collected using the Descriptive Information Form, Ramsey Sedation Scale, Physiological Parameter Form and ve FLACC-Behavioral Pain Scale. When the pain scores of the children were evaluated, the mean FLACC value of the children in the control group was significantly higher than the mean FLACC values of the children in the parental and music groups (p <0.05). When the physical parameter results were evaluated, it was found that the physiological measurement values of the children in the experimental group were positively affected after the parental and musical voice applications (p <0.05). As a result, it was observed that parental voice and music sound application reduced the pain caused by aspiration procedure and had a positive effect on life signs. In line with the results of the study, it is recommended to use parental or music sound methods to reduce pain during and after the aspiration procedure and to regulate physiological parameters.
