Abstract (EN)

One of humanity's most fundamental needs is to dress. In early times, human beings wore clothing primarily for coverage. However, just as everything in the world has evolved and changed, humanity's expectations for clothing have also increased. Beyond mere coverage, new demands have emerged, including the desire for adornment, the need to express identity, style, and status. Humanity first used fabrics by wrapping them around their bodies and fastening them with needles. As sewing techniques gradually developed, the shawl-like appearance fastened at the edges disappeared. Fabrics were then cut into pieces and sewn together to form garment sections. With the emergence of tailoring and cutting techniques during the Renaissance, patterns became increasingly important for creating well-fitting, figure-hugging garments. During the Industrial Revolution, machines were integrated into production processes alongside workforce. Production accelerated, the division of labour was established, and the number of products manufactured increased, laying the foundation for mass production. In this new production system, the importance of standardized patterns grew, enabling products to be manufactured more quickly. Various pattern-making techniques have evolved from the past to the present, and with technological advancements, these methods have been developed and utilized in diverse environments more practically. Pattern-making, a crucial stage in production, is also vital in fashion design education. Fashion design education is founded on two pillars: art education and vocational-technical training. Students take art courses such as basic art education and figure drawing, along with technical courses like fashion workshops, draping, and pattern making. The knowledge gained in pattern-making courses enables students to identify the technical details involved in designing garments and to plan their production effectively. Alongside the design process, technical knowledge positively impacts the ease of understanding processes in other courses within the curriculum and contributes to achieving accurate results. It also strengthens students' technical skills for the job sector where they will work as designers after graduation. This study aims to highlight the importance of the technical knowledge acquired in pattern-making courses within Fashion Design education and its influence on students' academic and professional careers. The research population consists of third- and fourth-year fashion design undergraduates in Turkey, as well as Turkish clothing designers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted both online and face-to-face with a purposive sample group comprising students from various universities and industry professionals. The interview data were analyzed using content analysis with MAXQDA software. The results were interpreted by comparing the analyses of student interviews with those of the designers within the context of the study.
