Abstract (EN)

This study comprehensively examines how the use of color is functionalized in modern painting. The study starts from the historical journey of color and summarizes how color was used in art movements from the Gothic period to Symbolism. During these periods, color mostly carried aesthetic and symbolic meanings and was used as an element of artistic compositions. However, with Impressionism, which is considered the real turning point of modern art, color went beyond being just a visual element and turned into a central tool of expression that conveys the artist's inner worlds and instant impressions. In this context, Impressionism has been evaluated as the starting point of modern art and is highlighted as the most important movement in the thesis. This transformation, which started with Impressionism, continued with movements such as Neo-Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism and Futurism, and these movements added a new dimension to art by adding new techniques and different interpretations to the use of color. While Neo Impressionism created optical mixtures by applying colors in small touches, Post Impressionism artists used colors extensively for emotional and personal expressions. While Fauvism created an emotional effect by using colors exaggeratedly and freely, Expressionism applied colors in striking tones to express psychological states. In Cubism, colors were used through analysis of form and structure, changing the perception of space, while in Suprematism, colors were used in a pure way with minimal and abstract forms. While Op Art used colors to create optical illusions, Pop Art emphasized images of popular culture and consumption with bright colors. These movements have demonstrated the indispensability of the use of color in the evolution of modern art in terms of different techniques and free and inner expressions. This study; Published articles, books, theses and internet sources about the mentioned art movements and color were researched and the relevant sections were used, and the data obtained as a result of a detailed analysis process was compiled.
