Abstract (EN)

There have been few studies that examined motivation and autonomy and their influence on learning English in Iraq. The main reason for conducting this study is to examine Iraqi students' level of motivation and autonomy, the correlation between them, and investigates student's perceptions of their motivation and autonomy in language learning. Using a mixed-methods approach, there were quantitative and qualitative phases, the participants in the qualitative phase numbered (N=260), while in the qualitative part, there were (N=30) participants. The findings reveal high levels of motivation among Iraqi students, indicating their enthusiasm for improving their English language proficiency. Students demonstrate a moderate level of autonomy in their learning. Nevertheless, the study establishes a positive correlation between motivation and autonomy, emphasizing their interconnectedness in language learning. Qualitative analysis unveils students' strategies for maintaining motivation, including problem-solving and goal-setting, which empower them to overcome challenges and achieve learning goals. Promoting learner autonomy is emphasized, urging educators to adopt innovative teaching methods that foster independent and autonomous learning.
