Abstract (EN)

AIM:In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of the reason for quitting smoking on the success of quitting smoking in the patients who applied to the Muğla Training and Research Hospital Smoking Cessation Polyclinic. MATHERIAL AND METHOD: Between February 2021 and December 2021, 191 patients who applied to the Muğla Training and Research Hospital smoking cessation outpatient clinic to quit smoking were prepared by scanning the literature, and a questionnaire was conducted in which sociodemographic characteristics, Fagerström nicotine addiction test, smoking cessation success prediction scale, and face-to-face interviews were recorded. After 6 months, the patients were called by phone and their quitting status and the difficulties they faced during the quitting process were recorded, and they were examined prospectively. Data analysis was done with SPSS 26.0 program and it was studied with 95% confidence level. Chi-square test, Pearson/Spearman correlation test, independent groups t, One way ANOVA/Kruskal Wallis tests were used in the study. RESULTS:The average age of the respondents is 35.92. 70.2% of the individuals participating in the survey are male, 29.8% are female, 52.2% are primary, secondary, high school graduates 47.8% are university or higher graduates, 49.7% are married 50.3% u is not married. 71.9% of the respondents are working and 28.1% are not working. Patients who applied to our outpatient clinic had different reasons for quitting smoking, but no statistically significant difference was found in the success of quitting between these reasons (p>0.05). It was found statistically significant that the mean age, duration of smoking and the amount of smoking of individuals who quit smoking were lower than those who did not quit (p<0.05). It was found that factors such as nicotine addiction level, marital status, gender, presence of chronic disease, employment status, and educational status had no effect on quitting success. It has been determined that increasing the duration of drug use increases the treatment success rate. In addition, varenicline treatment was found to be more effective on patients than NRT. The quit success rate of the patients who applied to our outpatient clinic and received treatment was 20% at the end of 6 months. CONCLUSIONS:There is no statistically significant difference between the reasons for quitting smoking and the success of smoking cessation. Completing the treatment period applied to the patients to 3 months and increasing the frequency of patients' visits can significantly increase the success rates. KEY WORDS:Nicotine addiction, reason for quitting, smoking cessation success, Fagerström nicotine addiction test
