Abstract (EN)

Maltepe is located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. Although some prehistoric items were found in Maltepe, the most clear findings of the settlement were revealed during the Byzantine period in AD VII. In Maltepe, which was a coastal village during the Byzantine period, traces of a palace and monastery were also found. Maltepe, which had been flocked with the Anatolian Seljuk rule since 1075, was again under Byzantine domination after the First Crusades in 1096. However, as of 1413, the Ottoman Empire, which came out of the period of fetret, regained Maltepe. The settlement of Maltepe, which suffered great damage during a major earthquake in 1509, was moved a little further westwards to its present location. During the Ottoman period in Maltepe, mostly Greeks and Turks lived together. With the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the World War I, this unity was disrupted and at the end of the war, mostly the Greek gangs and the Turkish gangs who participated in the national struggle were in conflict. National won the fight by the Treaty of Lausanne signed and exchange law should Ottoman Greeks of Istanbul within municipal boundaries except those of Greece, except Western Thrace Turks, while Greece and emigrated to Turkey. A new social structure was formed in Maltepe which was affected by this situation and the history of modern Maltepe started with the Republic declared in 1923.
