Investigation of the effect of narcisism, emotional intelligence and manipulative communication style on somatization

The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between narcissism, emotional intelligence and manipulative communication style with somatization and its effect on somatization. A total of 315 people, 188 women and 127 men, between the ages of 18-65 participated in the study. Revised Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale, Interpersonal Communication Styles Scale, Pathological Narcissism Inventory, Brief Symptom Inventory, Demographic Information Form and Earthquake Index Form were used in the study. SPSS 22.0 program was used for the analysis of the data obtained from the scales. Independent Sample t-Test and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were performed to examine whether somatization scores differed in terms of demographic variable categories. According to the results, it was observed that somatization scores differed in terms of gender and education level categories. In order to examine whether somatization scores differ between low and high score groups of independent variables, the Independent Sample t-Test was performed and it was concluded that somatization scores differed significantly between low and high score groups of narcissism, fragile narcissism, grandiose narcissism and manipulative communication style. Pearson Correlation Analysis was performed to examine the relationship between narcissism, emotional intelligence and manipulative communication style with somatization and it was observed that narcissism and manipulative style were positively corelated to somatization. In order to examine the effect of narcissism, emotional intelligence and manipulative communication style on somatization, Multiple Linear Regression Analysis was performed with the Stepwise method and it was observed that only narcissism had a statistically significant effect on somatization. The information obtained as a result of the research was discussed in the light of literature.
